'Canyon' makes me think of this trip three of my friends and I took to Utah, even though the Grand Canyon is not in Utah, but there are a lot of similar landscapes around there. So one of them was Capital Reef National Park. So we went there in the afternoon, we calculated our time so we could finish the drive before sunset, but we made a mistake in our calculations so it was dark before we got out of the park and we were trapped in this cliff kind of drive through area that was very steep and very rocky in this little car that looked like it could just flip over at any point.
My friend was a very inexperienced driver, so he was very nervous, and finally we got out of the cliff area and we thought, Ok, now, we’re just going home and five minutes later we ran into this huge heard of bison in the middle of the road.
My friend even as inexperienced as he was, he had the experience of running into a mule deer in Alaska, so he had some kind of trauma thing going on in his brain so when he saw the bison, he really freaked out and he thought about honking [at] them as a way to kinda chase them away. Of course that was – that would be a terrible idea you know, because that would prompt them to attack us.
We were kind of in a standstill with the herd for 20-30 minutes. There was no cell phone connection. It was pitch dark. And we were also running out of gas so that was a scary moment of our life, but eventually the herd gave way to us, and we were able to make it home safe and guess what we ate for dinner? Bison burgers!
